A Proposal for SEL Curriculum in Preschools

Problem: Children are increasingly exhibiting emotional and behavioral challenges, which hinder their learning, relationships, and self-image. There is no set SEL curriculum throughout early childhood education, which leads to gaps in learning among different schools and communities. There are challenges with time, lack of funding, and teacher training. Furthermore, many schools prioritize SEL below other academic subjects.

Solution: On top of embedding SEL into existing routines, schools need to ensure that teachers are continuously trained in SEL language and skills. To lower costs and increase accessibility, training can be done online. There should be one universal SEL curriculum that is simple and adaptable. It should be free or low-cost through government-funded/grant-funded programs. Furthermore, the curriculum should be available digitally to increase accessibility.
